It’s easy to forget about Forza, and Forza Motorsport 6 has been no exception – but that’s no knock on the franchise.
Upon Forza Motorsport’s 6 release, my excitement was palpable. This was the game to truly bring the “traditional” (i.e. non-Horizon entry) franchise into the next generation. It’s no secret that Forza 5 was an enhanced tech demo. As much as I enjoyed my time with it, there’s no denying this fact. The game was, in a word, lacking.
Thankfully, the two years since the Xbox One’s launch has provided more than enough time to fill in the gaps. Forza 6 is, without a doubt, the best game in the entire franchise and one of the premiere racing games in the genre.
It’s also a game I’m currently not playing extensively.
The issue with the onslaught of autumn video game releases has been extensively talked about over the past few years. For those out of the loop: publishers are filling the calendar with premiere games before the holiday shopping season “officially” begins. This year, it brings us Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Fallout 4, Star Wars: Battlefront, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void within a two week span. Those last three games even come out on the exact same day.
Unless you’re super human, there’s no way you have time for any of these games.
Now when it comes to Forza, it’s always been a franchise that’s been highly accessible for short and quick play sessions. Just want to do a couple of drives? Pop the disc in and start the engine. The game’s nature not only allows for these short and easy play times, but instead encourages them. Sure, you could also hop on for a quick match in Halo 5 or Black Ops III, but the odds of you relaxing throughout them are slim to none. Forza Motorsport 6 is the video game equivalent of a joy ride: smooth, relaxing, and enjoyable. It’s a game that doesn’t care if I’m spending every waking moment with it; it’s always there for me when I need a change of pace.
Until someone tries to cut you off on a corner, that is. But, thankfully, there’s the rewind button for that.
