Insomniac, the developer behind Spyro, Ratchet and Clank, and Sunset Overdrive, delivered a stunning gameplay demo of their upcoming game: Spider-Man. The title is due sometime in 2018.
Insomniac brought a brief taste of Spider-Man to Sony’s E3 showcase last year, running in-engine. The game appears to take influence from Ultimate Spider-Man’s heavy use of gadgets and technology.
The demo showed off Spidey villains Wilson Fisk (Kingpin) and Martin Li (Mister Negative). Peter Parker is likely the man behind the mask, as evidenced by the very-Marvel-like post credit shot of Miles Morales watching the action from below.
A little bit Arkham
The demo showed nearly 10 minutes of pure gameplay. Much like Batman in the Arkham series, Spider-Man can perch from above and take down enemies with stealth. In the demo he strings enemies up with webbing, strikes them with environmental traps, and uses spider-based gadgets to incapacitate anyone in his way. When dealing with enemies one-on-one, Spider-man brawls like a more agile version of the caped crusader.
A little bit Uncharted
Though the game incorporates heavier stealth elements and faster hand-to-hand combat, Spider-Man looks to borrow from Uncharted‘s sense of cinematic flare. In a particularly thrilling segment, Spider-Man rushes through a crumbling skyscraper, a-la Nathan Drake. Though quick time events have grown stale in recent years, this game appears to use them fiscally. When saving buildings from the wreckage of a falling crane, Spidey relies on timed button prompts to great effect.
A little bit Sunset Overdrive
But Insomniac isn’t into simply pinching gameplay elements from other great titles. Their own Sunset Overdrive was clearly used as a solid starting point for the web-slinger’s open-world. He nimbly swings from skyscraper to skyscraper, dashing and perching much like in Overdrive. The speed and freedom in which Spidey moves is sure to make for a fun way to get around come next year.
