Injustice: Gods Among Us – Red Son Dev Diary

Netherrealm Studios takes the wraps off their GameStop-exclusive Red Son DLC for Injustice: Gods Among Us.In the developer’s diary, which you can watch above, the team at Netherrealm talks about what inspired them to use Superman: Red Son for an extension to the game’s Mission Mode, which is similar to the Challenge Tower feature in the 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot; you progress through a series of challenges, this time with a storyline framing them.

For those unfamiliar with the story, Superman: Red Son is an alternate-universe DC Comics story where baby Kal-El, who would grow up to be Sueprman, has his alien ship crash in Ukraine instead of Smallville, KS during the 1950s. The story then revolves around him growing up to rule the Soviet Union with an iron fist, spreading communism across the world alongside Wonder Woman.

Hmm… a story where Superman takes over the world, alongside Wonder Woman. Now where have we heard this before?

Regardless, it’s an exciting development, as Red Son is regarded among the best Superman tales.

The DLC is, for now, exclusive to those who pre-order Injustice: Gods Among Us at GameStop. It’s confirmed for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, but Netherrealm hasn’t said whether Wii U owners will be getting it. A GameStop representative told me Wii U owners will receive it, but an official confirmation from the developers has not yet happened.

Injustice: Gods Among Us releases on April 16, 2013.
