Hyper Light Drifter is a 2D action role playing title developed by Heart Machine and will be playable sooner than people expect.
Today, Heart Machine unveiled a third trailer with the release date and some new information regarding their homage to games such as A Link To The Past. On March 31st, people can explore and fight off various creatures in the world of Hyper Light Drifter for Windows and OS X.
But that’s not all, console versions are set to come later this year and there’s even talk of the game appearing on handhelds like PS Vita at a later date.
What is a Hyper Light Drifter?
For starters, we know that Hyper Light Drifter seeks to capture the same experiences of playing video games on the Super Nintendo system. To further push that point, no spoken dialogue will be included in the game; story is to be told through scenery and the game’s music.
Alex Preston, an animator and lead developer for the game, wanted to develop a game that took elements from A Link To The Past and Diablo and combine them to create a world exploration title, where players would need to implore various strategies to face numerous foes.
The game is to be set around The Drifter, who wanders around the ruins of a decayed civilization to find a cure for an illness plaguing him. Armed with only an energy sword, The Drifter eventually will gain access to an assortment of weapons, including long range and AOE (Area of Effect) weaponry.
Starting out as a Kickstarter project, Preston set funding for the title at $27,000 USD to develop for just Windows, OS X and Linux but ended up receiving over $600,000 USD. This huge donation allowed Preston to ultimately expand his project by developing the game for additional consoles and hiring more programmers and artists.
We will update once console release dates have been made known.
