Guild Wars 2 Preps New PVP Update For December

The inaugural World Tournament Series for Guild Wars 2 is set to begin and developer ArenaNet is making sure the game is properly prepared with an all new PVP update.

With teams from North America, Europe, and China set to play for $50,000 in prizes in the upcoming World Tournament Series, an overhaul to the Guild Wars 2 matchmaking PVP system is set to take place. This December, a new update will use Glicko2 ratings, a player skill evaluation method, as well as keep track of player rank and team party size. The update will also bring a dishonour system, punishing poor behavior such as quitting matches before they’re finished.

These updates are helping ArenaNet introduce a new Ladder Formula that could be a stepping stone towards organized league player. It therefore makes sense to introduce these to Guild Wars 2 before launching a worldwide tournament.

“We are very excited to bring you all of these updates to PVP because they further enhance the experience and commitment to competitive gaming that makes Guild Wars 2 stand out among MMOs,” said John Corpening, Associate Game Director for Guild Wars 2. “This year we worked with our community to bring you the ‘Tournament of Legends’ as a path to Legendary weapons, the ‘Tournament of Glory’ to earn unique skins through skill based play in PvP, the ESL GO4 tournaments where players can earn weekly cash prizes and an even bigger monthly cash prizes and the World Tournament Series, where the very best players of each region can become legends on the international stage.”

In addition to the matchmaking changes, the new PVP update brings a mode that encourages players to practice and hone their skills. Think of it as an unranked version of PVP.
