GoldenEye: Source 5.0 Brings the Classic N64 Title Back to You

GoldenEye

A team of enthusiasts has been working over 10 years to bring Nintendo 64’s hit GoldenEye to modern PCs for the last several years. The result, GoldenEye Source 5.0, is a multiplayer shooter mod that will lift your nostalgia to a new level.

Talk about coincidences. The other day I was discussing with some friends about the joys of the old good Nintendo 64. Surfing the waves of nostalgia, we were going through some of the games that inevitably marked a milestone in our childhood gaming sessions. One of those games that popped out was GoldenEye 007 (1997). GoldenEye surfaces in a lot of Nintendo 64 discussions, on account of it being one of the most famous games of all time.

When you think about it, the game did not have a realistic damage system (those non lethal head shots…), no crosshair, and sometimes your could be hitting the air with your bare hands in a weird dance with your opponent without hitting him in the end. But it was real fun and found a place of its own. Such is the magic of James Bond.

Today, it seems that we all have reasons to be celebrating. A devoted group of enthusiasts has been working to bring a recreation of the game to today’s world – GoldenEye: Source is about to be released in its final form.

Ok, so what’s special about this version? First of it all, we won’t find anything relating to the single-player campaign since the game is a multiplayer mod only. Secondly, the team has spend nothing less than 10 years refining the gameplay, enhancing the graphics and the sound/music. This way, we’ll be able to walk and explore 25 original maps, enjoy 10 different game modes (some of them creation of the dev team) and use all the 28 weapons from the N64 title. On top of that, they have added a lovely batch of 120 achievements for us to complete. The weapon balance is based on the original game’s values and the crosshair is disabled by default. And from what you can read on their blog, they want to keep adding more content.

I do not know about you guys but I will surely give this one a try. You can download already the installer and read more about this initiative here.
