Ever since its announcement during E3 2016, the new God of War game has kept us pretty hooked. Currently slated for an early 2018 release, Kratos’ next adventure will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive. And it’s definitely bringing winds of change to the franchise.
Shifting from a Mediterranean setting to cold Nordic lands, God of War is primarily introducing the figure of Kratos’ son, Atreus, thus breaking the halo of eternal solitude that was always accompanying the Spartan warrior. On top of that, the developers have confirmed an improved combat system, an overhauled camera perspective and also the importance of exploration.
Information is dripping in dribs and drabs but everything pinpoints to a more complex narrative while keeping the traditional hack-and-slash elements of the saga. In other words, there are plenty of mythological foes to terminate but also, the uncompromising struggles of demigod parenthood. The fact that both Atreus and Kratos will have different progression systems also adds to the game’s gameplay depth in a way we have never seen before.
As we wait for more details and trailers to surface, Santa Monica has shared a handful of conceptual designs with its loyal community. These illustrations further showcase the beauty (and the perils) of the game’s new environments, emphasizing the importance of Atreus. While there’s nothing really new to see here, there’s something haunting, mysterious and definitely beautiful about them. Take a look!
Santa Monica nor Sony have confirmed an exact release date. We can only hope that they stick to their original plans and are not affected by any last-minute delays.
