Free Comic Book Day 2013

May the 4th, 2013 is dubbed Star Wars Day and Free Comic Book Day. It is a time for geeks everywhere to discover a new comic or jump into the world of comics for the first time.

I used to read comics when I was younger, mostly X-Men and Disney comics like Darkwing Duck. As I got older, I had less time to invest in comics. I also started to dislike buying a comic only to be done with it five to ten minutes later. The last comic that I bought (before diving back in) was a Farscape graphic novel. Loved it. I found myself loving graphic novels more than single issue comics. However it still didn’t get me back into comics, not like how I used to me.

It wasn’t until I finally downloaded the ComiXology application that I started to get back into the world of comics. Thankfully our very own comic guru, Greg, listed a few comic series that I should check out. I mentioned Deadpool to him and he advised me to try out The Uncanny X-Force, which I did and I’m glad that I did, amazing so far! This has kick started me back into reading comics, even if my time is still limited, I try to squeeze in at least thirty minutes to read per day.

My suggestion for this Saturday, go out and grab a free comic. While at your local comic shop (mine is Tate’s Comics which is located in South Florida), ask the employees which comic might be right for you. Check out this store locator to find a comic shop near you that will be participating in this event and go. Or if you’re without a nearby comic shop, check out the ComiXology application, they have heaps of comics waiting for you.
