First F1 eSports Champion Takes His Crown

F1 Champion

Brandon Leigh has been crowned the first ever champion in eSports F1 competition.  The tournament began with 60,000 potential participants, and Leigh was the only one left standing at the end of the day.

The competition, which took place at Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi, was extremely fierce.  The final legs of the competition included twenty players. The tournament came down to the wire, and the results of the final race were extremely close.  Leigh came from behind his competitors to seal his win.

Leigh said of his accomplishment: “I feel really happy because these two [Delgado and Zurner, his two competitors] are two of the best in the world now. It’s quite an achievement.”

Brendon finished with 74 points while the closest competitor Fabrizio Denoso Delgado has 68 followed by Sven Zurner with 64 points.  The nearest player to these top three only finished with 45 points.

Players were awarded points based on their final standings in each of the 3 races of the final.  Leigh won both the first and third races but came in eighth place in between.  He entered the final race one point behind the top competitor but was able to pull out a strong finish.

Leigh won several substantial prizes.  First, a character with his likeness will become a non player character (NPC) in the games 2018 edition.  He will also be the F1 eSports Champion Expert in 2018.  Additionally, he now is automatically qualified for a similar tournament in 2018.

While it does not currently boast a large player base in the United States, F1 will likely continue to grow in popularity.  Its similarity to traditional sports may assist in fan transition from regular sports into eSports.
