According to Bungie‘s newest weekly update, Destiny fans will be able to play their Guardians on both last-gen and current-gen consoles as long as they stay on the same platform. For example, PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4 or Xbox 360 to Xbox One. However, players can’t, say, play their Guardians from Xbox 360 to PlayStation 4. To make this work, your account isn’t tied to the system you play on, but the account its linked to.
Our service is built with flexibility in mind. As a player of Destiny, you have a Bungie account that’s bound to your PSN ID or your Xbox LIVE Gamertag, instead of a specific generation of device. – Bungie’s David Shaw
So if you haven’t taken the plunge into the current-gen consoles and want your Guardians to join you when you do so, make sure its under the same PSN ID or Xbox Live Gamertag.
