Dead Island 2 is not dead, Deep Silver says. The game may have entered in one of those hellish, draggy development cycles, but it’s far away from being over.
In a statement issued to Eurogamer, the publishing studio has insisted that the game is, somehow like a bunch of zombies, slowly kicking. “Dead Island 2 is in development at Sumo Digital, and we are excited by the progress the team are making with Deep Silver’s most successful IP. When we are ready to share more information, we will.”
It seems we won’t be having more concrete news about this title for the time being. However, this may send a beam of light to all Dead Island fans out there.
Dead Island 2 Inside a Development Loop
Plans to develop a sequel for the franchise started back in 2012, when the German development studio Yager pitched the idea to Deep Silver and got the deal. Originally, Dead Island 2 was supposed to happen by spring 2015. The game was present both E3 2013 and E3 2014.
However, by summer 2015, Yager’s vision for the game had already “fallen out of alignment” with that of Deep Silver. Development efforts had stopped altogether, Yager filed for bankruptcy, and the project lingered in a void. In March 2016, Deep Silver emerged from its silence to confirm that they had partnered up with Sumo Digital to bring the game back to life.
