Dead Island 2 Gets New Developer

Dead Island 2 is still happening, and Deep Silver has finally found a new developer to work on it.

After months of quiet, publisher Deep Silver finally has its team in place to finish its open-world zombie game Dead Island 2. UK developer Sumo Digital has been slated to pick up the pieces on this long-delayed sequel to Techland’s original game, whose development has been a bit of an epic story in its own right.

Deep Silver’s reveal of Dead Island 2 at E3 2014 was a bit of a surprise, but one that many found intriguing for a couple of reasons; the first was due to its fantastic teaser, and the second was the revelation that Dead Island 2 was being developed by Spec Ops: The Line developer Yager. Things seemed to be zipping along with its production, but Yager was suddenly removed from the project back in July of last year due to significant creative differences between them and Deep Silver.

The New Developer of Dead Island 2

So what’s the story about Sumo Digital? They’re a Sheffield, UK-based developer with a resume going back to 2004. Their most notable titles include F1 2011, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, and Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious. Also, they are working on the upcoming Crackdown 3. What does that background suggest about Dead Island 2? One can’t really say for sure, but it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect to see driving and/or dynamic traversal as a key feature of the game. Of course, all of this also depends on just how far along the project has come before Sumo stepped in. The expected release date for Dead Island 2 is still listed as ‘2016’, but who even knows if that’s attainable now that it has a new developer on the job.

In any case, today’s news should be joyous for anyone that’s been waiting for this game. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on any further Dead Island 2 Developments.
