Days Gone Unveils More Juicy Details of its Protagonist

Days Gone

He’s more of an anti-hero than anything else. But he’ll make a room in our hearts. Meet Deacon St. John, the drifter protagonist in Days Gone.

One of those moments that got us all hyped during the latest E3 was the announcement and gameplay trailers of Days Gone, the new IP from Bend Studio. A few minutes were everything we needed from both to get a taste of this upcoming third-person shooter based in a post-apocalyptic world where a pandemic left humanity teetering in chaos.

Zombies are called here “Freakers”. They run like a plague, swarming about the few remaining humans like madmen. The open world nature of Days Gone suggests that there will be different ways to complete our missions and objectives, which will entail a lot of running and shooting, avoiding those freaking crowds. While the game does not sound “that” original on a first glimpse, it’s the story behind the main fella that also got us interested and that will probably make a difference in the way we receive and experience Days Gone.

In an interview for the Playstation Blog, the folks at Bend Studio discussed a little bit more about him and have some juicy background details. Here are some of them.

Days Gone
Surviving the zombie Apocalypse like a boss.

Days Gone and its Anti-Hero

His name is Deacon St. John and, as we could see, he seems to have everything you need to survive out there. From the cool looks to the resourcefulness of a MacGyver.

“This guy’s a broken man”, says creative director Ron Allen. A drifter, a survivor, and probably a person that will step aside from the cannon view of what a hero feels like. Also, the fact that he used to be the MC of a motorcycle gang cannot be overlooked. “He learned a lot from being part of that group, and that’s helped him survive”, confirms Allen.

From the way he reacts to events in the gameplay trailer, we can expect a very tough guy with clear objectives and resolution. On the other hand and knowing the drills of that world, could it be otherwise? “He’s a dangerous guy […]. His appetite for violence and mayhem helps him excel at his job”.

Moreover, the relationship between him and his motorcycle will be key as well, playing a “huge, huge part”. Deacon St. John has tweaked it to survive in the wilderness and be his companion. It’s clear this is the last remnant of the life he lead before, the life he lost. In that respect, Days Gone will also be about his journey to find himself amidst that solitude.

Days Gone
We totally dig his style.

Days Gone has yet to confirm a launch date. However, with each passing week we are getting more and more details of what Sony has up their sleeves. So we remain vigilant and longing for more.

How do you like what has already been revealed so far?
