Brink (Preview)

For those unfamiliar with the title, Brink is a First Person Shooter developed by Splash Damage. The story takes place on the Ark, a floating city that’s on the brink of a civil war. Experiencing problems between the growing of two groups, Security and Resistance, a battle takes place for control of the Ark. Brink mixes the single-player, co-op, and multiplayer experience all into one, allowing you to build your character whether playing alone, with friends, or against others online. You decide the role you want your character to assume in the world of Brink, as you fight to save yourself and mankind’s last refuge.

The developers at Splash Damage are trying to make a game world that looks and feels different than much of what’s out there. An with some of the game’s features I think they’re on the brink of that. Brink introduces a new movement system, Parkour, which is a easier way of saying smooth movement across random terrain(S.M.A.R.T). It’s used for vaulting, mantling, climbing, sliding, and even seeking cover. One feature that has me pumped is the customization, if you know me you’d know that I love the ability to customize my character. In Brink, there is so many things to customize that I could promise, you would never run into someone who looked similar. Customization extends from, hairstyles, helmets, face paint, tattoos, skin tone, clothing, body types, and even a variety of voice overs. There will also be a class system, sightly similar to the way “Killzone” determined its players. “Squads of the Resistance and Security forces are composed of Engineers, Medics, Operatives and Soldiers. A team will work together to achieve the overall objective of a mission, but you will also be able to complete contextual objectives that benefit the team and earn you additional experience points.”

Just when I reached the point of boycotting first person shooters, here comes Brink. Brink, isn’t like the average first person shooter. It seems like the environment is not set around the regular World War II type atmosphere, which is seen a lot in modern games today. Instead its going for a more urban futuristic setting. From what I’ve seen, the gameplay looks very smooth. This game takes the good things from well known first person shooters, mixed with its own style ,and puts it all together to form one hell of a game.

Brink is definitely on the list as one of my most anticipated games of the year. Everything that I’ve seen so far has satisfied my expectations. Although, I am yet to have a hands on experience, I’m pretty comfortable with what Splash Damage has to offer. If you haven’t really looked into Brink as a purchase, I recommend giving it some thought. The multi-platformer Brink, will be available May 17, 2011 at your local retailers.
