Android TV Already Seeing Support From Devs

Despite only being announced in the past 48 hours many developers have already announced their support for Google’s Android TV platform. EA announced that NBA Jam will be compatible with Android TV; Senri announced that their game Leo’s Fortune will support Android TV, even demoing on stage at Google’s keynote. Vector Unit announced that their ever popular Riptide GP2 will support it. The others are

  • Soul Calibur: fighting game from Namco Bandai.
  • Clarc: adventure game from GoldenTricycle.
  • Cordy: platformer from SilverTree Media
  • Deer Hunter 2014; hunting sim from Glu
  • Super Party Sports Football; a football game from Handy Games

world-of-content

I’d expect to see more higher profile games such as Dead Trigger 2 announce support in the coming weeks as some developers seem to have received Android TV hardware prior to the announcement of the platform at I/O. As more developers can order prerelease units I would expect more games to support.

The uptake of support seems to be greater than it has been for any other Android based console. This is most likely due to the Play Store having a large preëxisting catalog of games that are easy to port, because other consoles have all had separate app stores. Theoretically any Android game will be supported, although the lack of touchscreen makes many unplayable. Those, however, which already have good controller support will most likely work.

Android TV will be releasing in the fall and will come in add-on boxes and built into select Sony TV’s in 2014 and Sharps in 2015. Will you be picking up one or do use an existing solution such as a Roku or Apple TV?
