Activision Announces Indie Competition Winners

Activision’s Independant Games Competition pushes innovation and new ideas in the realm of interactive entertainment, and at the same time rewards those willing to do so. Here are the most recent winners.Juried by IndieCade, this competition saw plenty of varied and interesting entries. But there can only be one first and one second place winner, and they were Christopher Hui’s Iron Dragon, an “action flight adventure optimized for touch controls,” and Michael Stanton’s Planet Smashers, a multiplayer action game built with a fresh engine.

For Iron Dragon, Christopher Hui won first place honors and $175,000. Planet Smashers earned second place and a $75,000 cash prize. The winners will also retain intellectual rights to their work. Dan Winters, Activision’s Vice President of Internal Development, had this to say about the event:

We were excited with the quality, creativity and diversity we saw in the submissions we received for the Games Competition. While the games themselves varied, the unifying theme for everyone involved in the competition has been passion.  We want to thank the talented developers who submitted their work and our partners at IndieCade.  The energy and enthusiasm of the indie community continues to inspire us and we’re thrilled to help make their dreams become reality.

As the mainstream gaming industry seems to follow the trend of the week, it’s nice to know that there are always imaginative people willing to follow their passion. Congratulations to all the contestants for all your hard work, and to the winners for shining brightest.
