Absolver By Devolver: Online Melee Action

Absolver seeks to make a name for itself in a world where online shooters are at the top of the heap right now. Classified as an “online combat RPG,” Absolver sounds like just the kind of different players will want to experience.

Absolver’s publisher, Devolver Digital is known for their work on many indie titles such as Serious Sam, Broforce, Enter The Gungeon and plenty more games to choose from.

Joining Devolver as the developers on this project is Sloclap, a brand new studio comprised of former Ubisoft Paris developers. As such, this close-quarters combat MMO is Sloclap’s debut title as a developing studio and the game has actually been in development since May 2015.

Absolver is said to have a focus on a up-close and personal combat system where players will engage in intense one-on-one battles or exhilarating three-on-three duels.

“We think the world would be a much better place if there were no guns,” says creative lead Pierre de Margerie. “Then we could finally focus on important things, like sword fighting and how to kill a man with one punch.”

These words tap into a fantasy we’ve all had at one point where hand-to-hand combat was a means to an end. Settling differences with fists or seeking out treasures as a group armed with swords and other various weapons still holds appeal to the masses.

Real-time combat has players performing various devastating attacks within one of four tactical stances. Dodging and parrying must also be utilized to fully master Absolver’s combat system. The online portion of the game sounds just as cool as the combat system. Found on Absolver’s YouTube trailer page, players will need to express caution when encountering other players.

“Prospects and Absolvers will seamlessly encounter others in the world, generating unique stories that emerge through player interaction and choices. These moments are filled with tension as intentions to battle, trade, or befriend are never clear: trust is always a leap of faith. Encounters will have lasting consequences and transform into meaningful relationships as you make friends or enemies and find mentors or disciples.”

With any luck, Absolver will stand by this description because having a video game experience like this doesn’t happen too often. Forming groups with others sounds necessary since the world could potentially be quite hostile.

Absolver isn’t scheduled to release anytime soon–the game is set to launch some time in 2017. As of right now, PC is the only confirmed console Absolver will release on. Though it’s to be expected that the game will also come to current gen systems as well.
