Death is a big part of most games, in fact unless your playing Kirby it’s likely to experience death quite frequently, but not many games dare to include permanent death as an option. In this respect Undead Labs upcoming ‘Class 3‘ is breaking the mold.
Once again the folks over at ‘Class 3‘ are cryptically releasing hints about game mechanics through the medium of a supposed survivor diary. This weeks entry gives us some interesting details about damage, healing and death.
“This is a risky design choice and one that could easily lead to a game that’s only for the most hardcore players, but that’s not our goal. We are always guided by two words: fun first. That’s why getting overwhelmed in a single fight won’t instantly get you zombified. It’s also why you’ll get clear warning signs if a character is close to succumbing, and why there are ways to build on your legacy if someone doesn’t make it.”
They’re are quick to acknowledge that this is a potentially risky move, the riskiest really. It’s incredibly rare for a game to even consider using such a stand-out mechanic. But it works if you really think about it, this game is all about survival, all about zombies and with Undead Labs being huge zombie buffs themselves it makes perfect sense.
The pay-off for this could be hugely beneficial, even the brutal Dark Souls doesn’t use perma-death, this could give ‘Class 3‘ a reputation as a truly hardcore game. But like they said, it’s all about fun, meaning that losing your character to the undead horde isn’t likely to happen easily, and definitely not often.
Again Undead Labs have really set the bar high for what this game will become, but it’s only set as high as the studio’s aspirations. ‘Class 3′ is months from being in even the most basic of playable states, but i for once an hungry for a chance to see this project in action.
