Thirty Days of Video Games Day Nineteen – Favorite Type

I started out playing platformers like Mario and Sonic and it didn’t hurt that I was growing up in that golden age either. I tried Legend of Zelda and ended up hating it so I stuck with platformers until I started to go to the arcades more and more. During so started my love for fighting games like Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, Vitura Fighter, Street Fighter, Tekken, Fighting Vipers and many more.

Up until I was 18, my favorite genre was fighting games and I was good at it. I then met my future husband and my love for RPGs had begun. This started me down the road that led me to the world of Final Fantasy, Lunar and many more. I still have a backlog of PsX RPG games that I still need to play.

Even with my history of platformers, fighting games and RPGs, there is one genre that tops them all for me and without RPG, shooters, action and platformers, I don’t think this genre of video games would be around or at least not as good as it is and there’s still room for improvement.

For me, my favorite type of game is action RPG. It takes all the great elements of a game and smashes them together to make great games like Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Star Wars: The Old Republic. I love a game with a great story and characters to match and I find that with an action RPG. Now when I try to play a classic RPG, I find myself bored and wanting more. I know I shouldn’t and this might cause a problem when I want to play those RPGs but that’s the truth, I’ve been spoiled by action role playing games.
