Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment have confirmed the rumors, releasing an announcement trailer for Injustice 2.
NetherRealm Studios will once again be developing the sequel and Ed Boon, the man behind Mortal Kombat, has been promising that the new game will alter the way that fighting titles are played. This is a lofty claim indeed, and one that wasn’t elaborated on with anything specific in terms of new features and mechanics.
The first game – Injustice: Gods Among Us – was released three years ago and was highly praised by both comic fans and fighting game fans alike. Injustice 2 is set to continue the story from the first game while adding new characters into the fray. On the official PlayStation blog, Ty Lansdown said:
“When last we saw them, Superman was imprisoned in a Red Sun prison cell, while Batman was continuing the good fight against the forces that would see Superman’s tyranny back in power. Where do we go from here? And what new characters will join the fight? Of course you’ll have to play the game to find out”
Lansdown also shed some light on the improvements and additions to the games features: “We’re adding new characters, new environments, and we’re taking environment destruction and interaction to the next level.” So in the very least, the developers aiming for bigger, better, and more!
There was also confirmation that, much like Tekken and Street Fighter, both fighter appearance and fighting style can be fully customized for a more personalized experience. On top of this, owners of the mobile version of Injustice: Gods Among Us will be able to unlock alternate versions of Injustice 2 Superman and Aquaman by completing certain challenges in-game.
The game is scheduled for release in 2017, with no specific date yet announced.
