The Numbers Are In: Over 4 Million Gamers Played Destiny Beta

When Bungie and Activision released the beta versions of Destiny on Microsoft and Sony’s consoles, nearly every gamer online and in the streets talked about it. Today, we’ve learned from the company that over 4.6 million people have participated in the beta, which came to a close last Sunday.

The open beta for Destiny lasted for a good 10 days, from July 17 to the 27. In that short amount of time, gamers who have been eagerly waiting to get their hands on the game since it’s E3 2013 reveal rushed to download the beta on their PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles — all of which will be official retail releases of Destiny come Sept. 9.

At beta’s end, there were exactly 4,638,937 playing the game. Surely, with this many Guardians roaming around to uncover the mystery of various planets, there was bound to be some feedback on where Destiny excels and where it needs improvement.

“Hosting a beta at this scale is an incredible feat, so we’re thrilled to see a phenomenal response… This is the biggest beta of this console generation by a wide margin and the largest console beta ever for a new video game IP to date.” – CEO of Activision Publishing Eric Hirshberg

Not only should this accomplishment be met with the feeling that both the publisher and developer will apply the feedback to help Destiny get to the Triple-A title status, but it’s also a major accomplishment for gamers who experience what most feel is a lost cause: giving a game company a piece of their mind on where their games are and showing opinion on where they should be.

Consumer feedback is necessary in today’s video game industry, and the Destiny beta shows that Activision and Bungie have become extremely aware of that fact. So celebrate, gaming fans! If it turns out that Destiny ends up being one of the greatest first-person adventure game of this generation, it’ll be because we were a huge factor in making that happen.
