Survey: It's Popular To Not Care About 3D

It can be argued that the 3DS’s glasses-free 3D could have set it apart from any other gadget of its kind; the kind of “only on Nintendo” innovation that played a part in their domination of the industry these past five years with the Wii and DS. Well, it turns out that people just don’t care.

In a recent survey conducted by research firm Interpret LLC, the overwhelming majority of respondents said that 3D either “doesn’t affect or detracts from the experience” while a small percentage (22%, in fact) said that 3D “adds to the experience.”  In another survey, only 28% knew that the 3DS does not require glasses. And in a more general discovery, only 7 percent prefer a 3D experience on handheld over on a television.

I have always been a fan of 3D, and I do believe that if anyone can show that 3D is capable of  more than making a wall seem farther away, it’s the creative minds at Nintendo. Although right now, the creativity needs to show in their marketing. While you can’t show 3D on normal televisions, plenty of people are smart enough to understand the concept of 3DS-they just need the right message. Buying advertisements on 3D channels and in 3D theaters should be on the top priorities list for these guys. Imagine if everyone who saw The Lion King 3D watched a short compilation video of 3D game footage from Star Fox, Zelda, Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, and Paper Mario right before the movie started. If Nintendo starts to consider what good marketing can do, those numbers will be much different a few years from now.
