Telltale Games has inked a deal with HBO to produce an episodic game series based on the Game of Thrones franchise, according to an HBO press release. Telltale Games (The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us) made the announcement during the 2013 Spike VGX awards last weekend.
“Working with HBO to develop a new game series based on Game of Thrones is a natural fit for our studio,” said Dan Connors, co-founder and CEO of Telltale Games. “(The series) will put (gamers) in control of the epic stories of warfare, intrigue, violence and revenge that we know and love.”
Perhaps that’s enough action to keep South Park’s Butters distracted from the show’s gratuitous use of “wieners.”
Game of Thrones‘ first episode is scheduled for a 2014 digital release, and the series will span multiple years. At least the first game will be released on consoles, PC and Mac, and mobile devices; no specific platforms were confirmed.
Neither Telltale nor HBO has confirmed whether or not the games will explore any material exclusive to George R.R. Martin’s novels.
A teaser trailer can be seen below.
Telltale also announced that it is creating a spinoff of the Borderlands franchise called Tales of the Borderlands.
The San Francisco Bay Area developer has gained commercial and critical success with expanding comic and TV universes such as The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us. Telltale has also created adaptations of classic game series including Sam & Max and Monkey Island.
