With the word of a price drop for the Wii U on the horizon ($50 drop on September 20th), some gamers are wondering if Nintendo would do a repeat of their Ambassador Program for the early 3DS adopters. Well, don’t hold your breath. Nintendo‘s customer service department has confirmed that there are no plans to offer an Ambassador Program for the Wii U‘s early adopters, despite making a price drop less than a year after launch. In retrospect, the Nintendo 3DS saw an $80 price drop six months or so after launching. As a way to apologize to gamers who felt cheated, those who bought the 3DS at launch got 20 free games out of the whole deal, which led Wii U owners to start to wonder if they’d get a similar bonus.
Nope.
In truth, the move makes sense. The price drop in the case of the 3DS happened swifter and with a bigger discount. $50 is still nothing to sneeze at, but still not as big as a drop as $80. Also, it’s well known that if you buy a console at launch, you open yourself up to a number of potential pitfalls, including launch glitches, hardware problems, and in this case, a quicker than usual price drop. Time will tell whether the price drop will reverse the Wii U‘s fortunes.
