What We Played February 3 – 9

Welcome to Press Start (What We Played)! This is a weekly segment that dives into what we here at The Game Fanatics have played during this past week. What did you game?

Enis: With my friend being in town this week I didn’t have much time for anything. Before he arrived I got in a few hours of Halo 4. Was disappointed this week at the Spartan Ops episode, but this upcoming one looks promising. Also downloaded the Crysis 3 Beta to play with the crew. That’s it for me!

Jeff: I dedicated my week to finishing Mass Effect 3. It’s been a lot of fun shaping my universe, even if it didn’t count towards how my saga ended. Individual characters or entire species lived or died based on my actions. The stuff with the Reaper kid didn’t make much sense, but I just got the idea that they were a disillusioned bunch. It kind of worked, but it’s not how I would have written it. Still, it was a great ride the whole way.

Darrin: A little bit of Borderlands 2, just finishing up some side quests… Trying to pace myself so I can be free when Injustice: Gods Among Us comes out, especially now with Rayman delayed unnecessarily.

Greg: Fallout NV. New Vegas Bounties is a really great mod. one of the best I’ve played. Adds a ton of fun bounties to capture/kill all across the Mojave. Other than that, almost done with Anitchamber, and still working on my Mechromancer in Borderlands 2.

William: Been playing a lot of Psychonauts. Mechanically, this game is actually rather bland. Jumping, punching and what not, you don’t actually DO that much. But the way they ask you to use the powers you have, narratively, is amazing. Fighting a boss through the bosses eyes. Flying around a level that turns in on itself, and working with a another student at the psychic camp who’s solution to the brewing disaster is “making out”, the story is both well written and hysterical. So far the story is just too good, even though things don’t look good for me… the seas will, after all, run white with his rage…

Nick: I was sick this weekend, so I did plenty of gaming — with much time spent in Fable 2. While having a buggy combat engine, Fable 2 draws you in with its level of depth as a pseudo-life simulator. When you consider how much can happen within a “day” between fighting, taking jobs/running businesses, and raising a family, you end up with a product that sucks up a lot of your time apart from the story line. It’s not Skyrim, but I find it to be a more inviting way of you controlling your character’s development.Ben: Been playing a lot of Sleeping Dogs. It’s really really good. I wasn’t that excited for GTA5 but now I don’t care at all. This is pretty much exactly what I want in an open world game: great story, combat, driving, and side missions.

I also started playing Final Fantasy 9 because I never had before and it was on sale. I’m still pretty early so I can’t judge it too much yet. It does have a very good start that feels more like the middle of an rpg than the beginning and I have to give it credit for that.
