Welcome to Press Start (What We Played)! This is a weekly segment that dives into what we here at The Game Fanatics have played during this past week. What did you game?
William: Beat Psychonauts this week, and with that, I’m on to… Finish X-COM? I haven’t really thought that far ahead. Psychonauts was excellently written, though mechanically mediocre. The story, characters, and dialog are what make that game a classic. You don’t often see humor done well in games, but this one nailed it.
Jeff: After the Mass Effect Trilogy, I went for a galaxy less… emotionally demanding. I played through all six chapters of Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, and these games are still a blast. There’s still plenty of content left, but Shadow of the Colossus and Metal Gear Rising beckon. We’ll see just what wins out this week, I suppose.
Jake: Fire Emblem: Awakening continues to rock my soul. Picked up a Galaxy SIII finally, so I’ve been seeing what’s up with Baseball Superstars 2013. And HoN once again has all of my attention.
Greg: Borderlands 2. Lots of Borderlands 2. Completed main story with Mechromancer, and two DLCs (Torgue and Hammerlock.) Mr. Torgue is one of my favorite characters in the game, probably the best written. Great DLC. Hammerlock DLC is ok. Not terrible, not great. Started True Vault Hunter mode with Scarlett DLC. Really liking the Plasma Anarachist build. Really effective and fun.
Joel: I have just started Far Cry 3 and it has the most intense beginning to any game I have every played. I am captivated by the open world and the hunting. Almost reminds me of Red Dead Redemption every time I skin an animal. I cannot forget my other obsession currently which is Persona 4 Golden. I am trying to play as much as I can before I create my review because this game is packed! If you need a game for your Vita or a reason to buy one, Persona 4 is it!
Darrin: I reached the “white phosphorous mortar” scene in Spec Ops: The Line. All I can say, without spoiling it for those who haven’t played yet, is that it shook me to my core. Masterful storytelling.
Jen: I think I actually beat TheAtRhythm: Final Fantasy, didn’t think that was possible but there is a lot more that needs to be done. I picked up a Star Trek game for the Sega Genesis. Haven’t had a chance to play it though. Spent some time Sith side in SWTOR and had a lot of fun being mean. I downloaded the DDR game for the iPhone and tried it out during my break at work. Wish I could adjust the settings since when I do like to play ITG or a DDR game, I like to up the speed. Can’t do that with this game. Enjoying the music at least.
Ben: Finished up Sleeping Dogs and it was pretty great. Easily one of the best games of last year. Then I started up Max Payne 3. I dig the storytelling style and the shooting is very fun. The areas are super detailed and it’s pretty crazy. Really digging it so far. I also continued down the Final Fantasy 9 train and it feels somewhat like (brace yourself) Final Fantasy 13 to me. Just the way it keeps separating party members, linear dungeons, and stuff like that. Whether or not you think that is crazy, it’s still a very fun RPG and I can’t wait to see how the story plays out.
