Welcome to the Chalice Dungeons, Bloodborne’s Procedural Nightmare

Bloodborne had a very good showing at Sony’s PlayStation Experience and The Game Awards where they hinted at the Chalice Dungeons, an optional but equally terrifying procedurally-generated dungeon. The Chalice Dungeons is a new feature that takes players into the depths of ancient underground ruins located beneath the streets of Yharnam. By using holy chalices, players can enter these dungeons and explore the vast structures and multiple levels. Every time a portal is opened up, the structure of the dungeon itself changes and thus we have our procedurally-generated portion of Bloodborne.

These dungeons are filled with traps, nightmarish creatures, and of course rewards for brave and skilled hunters to claim whether they complete them on their own, or with the help of other hunters online. This a really cool concept and what really puts it over the top for me is the ability to upload and share your own dungeons with friends or go online and find new Chalice Dungeons to explore and discover. This adds another layer of replayability to the game aside from co-op sessions and multiple playthroughs.

Producer at SCE Japan Studio, Masaki Yamagiwa took to the PS Blog to showcase this new and exciting feature along with a slew of new screenshots.  Yamagiwa also goes into detail about that crazy fire-breathing dog we all saw at PSX, apparently this freakish anomaly is an ancient guard dog. It has a rock-hard petrified exterior and clad in a dense cloak of flames, these ancient guard dogs are said to be the oldest creatures found in the ruins. If that doesn’t get the hair on the back of your neck stand up then I don’t know what will.

Bloodborne is looking better and better and we can’t wait to venture into these dungeons, even if we don’t ever make it out alive. The hunt begins on March 24th 2015 exclusively on PS4.
