Watch: Katana ZERO’s New Trailer Wields a Gorgeous Pixel Platformer

Don’t blink or you just might miss what’s going on in the latest Katana ZERO sneak peek! Askiisoft presented a new trailer of their neo-noir themed platformer, with the assassin protagonist showcasing many of his in-game mechanics as he dashes and slashes through enemies. The highlighted feature is certainly the player’s ability to plan his missions ahead, using a time bending drug called Chronos. But you’ll also get an extra feature from it, quite handy for timed acrobatic combat: Slow motion.

Katana Zero is set to release this 2017, so let the synthwave soundtrack hypnotize you and ready your katana, it’s going to get bloody, retro-arcade style.

Dominate Your Future in Katana ZERO

The dark thematic resembles Gemini Rue at its gloomiest points, but shifts to a Miami Hotline bright when neon lights shine incandescently. Katana ZERO puts you in this pixel noir world to be an effective assassin, making use of the game’s simple mechanics: jump, dash, roll, grapple hook, throw, block, and attack; it’s spiced up with the necessity of combining those with slow motion and quick acrobatics, avoiding death in a fast paced sequences. The clock’s running, and your Chronos dose only gives you so much planning before it fades, so the quickest the better. And remember, no survivors.

From packed discos, to decaying apartments, the assassin will visit stylish yet threatening environments that always carry improvised resources for his mission. A knife, a throwable vase, or maybe a crowd where to blend in, everything could come in handy as you look for your target. Each of these levels are carefully designed, with no random generation but many paths to choose, turning Katana ZERO into a possible challenge for speed-runners.

Katana Zero Fight

There’s certain visual details that stand out in Katana ZERO’s pixel art, and one of them is the dynamic lightning that directly affects sprites. It’s a little graphic touch that helps a lot when avoiding a plain look, together with the motion effects. They come in the shape of high-speed movement sprites and the use of camera wobble. It’s kind of flashy, but the kind neo games with hasty fights can use to its favor to boost immersion.

More details about the Katana ZERO will surely arrive closer to its release, currently expected to be during this 2017. In the meantime, visit the official website for more information, and train your reflexes for when the time to wield a katana comes.
