The latest Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands trailer is a live-action descent into the madness and brutality of the Santa Blanca cartel.
War Within the Cartel is a 30-minute short film set to introduce us to the inner workings of the Bolivian cartel. The trailer takes us through gorgeous sprawling landscapes, deceit, and unsavory retribution all within 2-minutes. Fans will be a bit disappointed that there is no actual gameplay here but they will be happy to see an attempt to add real dimension to the residents of Bolivia. Explaining the back story in such detail adds a complexity and depth that is usually missing from online shooters. With the characters given full back stories and motivations, there will be a real consequence and force to your actions, leaving you feeling connected to the world rather than just another passenger along for the ride.
Produced by Roberto Orci, who has written screenplays for Transformers, Star Trek, and The Amazing Spider-Man, the short will also star rapper turned actor T.I. as Marcus, a member of the Santa Blanca cartel.
If the trailer is any indication, we can expect a thoroughly enjoyable back story that will tie together the narrative and add a new dimension to the antagonists. While live-action shorts are not a new idea for video games this beautifully realized trailer lends itself well to Ubisoft’s offbeat marketing.
