Wakfu Developer Diary – MMO Innovation

Wakfu, Square Enix’s new turn-based MMORPG has released their first Developer Diary, and I’ve got to say, they have presented some intriguing content. Setting up a world in which player interactions are so necessary is something that is drastically different from most MMO design in this day and age. Ever since World of Warcraft graced our computers, MMORPG designers seemed to adopt the mantra of “Let our players solo”, with questionable results (in the opinion of this writer).

Square Enix has always gone against the grain in these regards, pushing the envelope of MMO design in less appreciated categories of gameplay (economics, politics, and here even ecosystem). Always with the goal of encouraging as much player interaction as possible.

At the end of the day, the appeal of an MMORPG is that it is a massive continuous world in which a player works with scores of other players to achieve goals and to experience adventure. This is definitely a game to keep your eye on.

From the ever-changing ecosystem to a deep, rich political system, Game Designer “Azael” and Community Manager “Zidrune” of Ankama take fans behind-the-scenes and provide an in-depth look at how and why they put the players in control of the world for their upcoming MMORPG, WAKFU.

Today, the first Developer Diary “Power to the Player” is now available.

Published by Square Enix, Inc. and developed by Ankama, WAKFU is an all-new, tactical turn-based MMORPG that will be launching worldwide as a free download in February 2012 and include with it a large amount of gameplay content to experience at no cost.  In addition, a monthly subscription fee of $6.00 will give players access to premium content, and a microtransaction-based store will allow users to purchase cosmetic items.

Featuring an amazing anime art style, players can choose from 12 unique character classes and engage in rebuilding a world lost in chaos through strategic combat, crafting, and even national politics!
