The SSV Normandy SR-1
The SSV Normandy SR-1 also known as the Systems Alliance Space Vehicle Stealth Reconnaissance 1 is one of the main spaceships in the Mass Effect series. Considered a “scout” ship the SSV Normandy SR-1 is the main ship used in the series. Commanded by Commander Shepard this became the main place for operations in the title.
Mass Effect has become one of the most popular sci-fi role playing action titles to have come out for the Xbox 360 and PC. The game is set in the year of 2183 CE after the humans discovered another race called Protheans on the planet Mars. In the first title you are learning about the alien race and technology discovered. Soon to find out that another unidentified alien force appears attacking a human colony and killing a “Spectre” named Nihlus sent by the Citadel’s Office of Special Tactics and Reconnaissance to watch over Commander Shepard. Your adventure starts by becoming a “Spectre” and hunting down the killer of Nihlus. Developed by BioWare, there are two current installments that have been released for the series and the third title: Mass Effect 3 to be released in 2011.
The Tantalus Drive Core
The SSV Normandy SR-1 was named after the battle of Normandy in 1944, during WWII. The ship itself is home to more than 20 people aboard it. This ship is known for its stealth capabilities as well as its power source called the “Tantalus Drive Core“. This is a core of mass effect that is double its normal size. The Tantalus Drive generates large amounts of concentrations that the SSV Normandy SR-1 falls into making it have the ability to move without any thrusters.
With the Tantalus Core in place and the stealth capabilities of the SSV Normandy SR-1 makes this ship almost unstoppable. It uses it’s hull to temporarily store the heat from the thrusters when needed to go into “stealth mode” and scout out enemy territory. Unfortunately if the heat is not radiated properly, eventually the ship will start an explosive combustion and kill everyone on board.
SSV Normandy SR-1 Crash Site
Yes it is true, this epic spaceship crashes. 20 of the crew members are lost and a monument is placed in remembrance of those who perished in the crash. In the Mass Effect 2 DLC (downloadable content) you have the chance to go through an assignment to recover any signs of the fallen members of the ship.
