Valve has announced Steam Music, a way to listen to songs as you play games in either SteamOS or Big Picture Mode.
The marriage of music and video games through an OS is far from a new idea; it’s something Microsoft utilized on both the original Xbox and Xbox 360. Sadly, it’s a relationship that hasn’t necessarily made itself over to the PC world. Sure, we can just launch other programs and then alt-tab into our games, but certain operating systems may not be able to support certain music clients.
Steam Music is currently slated to only support .mp3 files, but many were quick to ask about Spotify or Google Music support. According to the official FAQ, Steam Music‘s support will change over time, opening the door for those and other programs.
A closed beta is set to begin soon. Anyone interested in testing the feature should join the Steam Music group. Participants will be chosen at random.
