“Then what’s a ten?”
“Clowns.”
“Clowns over my death?”
It is lines like these that make a great game. When the first trailer premiered on the SpikeTV Video Game Awards back in 2008, it was clear that Naughty Dog was looking to make the best possible game, not only on the Playstation 3, but on all consoles. During that time until launch, many fans were thrilled to try to get their hands on the game. Sony even rented out a few theaters to show early gameplay to regular gamers, not just the media.
When the game launched in October, Uncharted 2 was able to push out about 830,000 copies in the first week, making it the second fastest selling PS3 exclusive. Many sites quickly reviewed the game days before release; most of them dishing out perfect scores. As a matter of fact, according to Metacritic, Naughty Dog’s creation has received over 35 perfect scores, averaging at a score of about 96.
Most gamers, including me, called it their 2009 Game of the Year. It is unusual for an exclusive to receive a game of the year award, especially with Modern Warfare 2 coming out a month later. All that changed when SpikeTV awarded Uncharted 2 with Game of the Year (along with Best PS3 and Best Graphics). Following that, many sites starting give it their game of the year award, recently IGN. It just goes to show, that when you put hard work into a game, exclusive or not, great things will come.
We all play games, right? Even if you are a one-console owner, you must admit that some games are better on the other console as well. That is what makes a true gamer. These developers don’t make games just to make them; they make them for you. You owe to yourself to play this game at least once. I’m on my seventh play-through as we speak. Congratulations to Naughty Dog being the best that they can be, and making a phenomenal game.
