Ubisoft Announces Two Free Expansions For The Division In 2017

Ubisoft announced that Tom Clancy’s The Division will feature a second year of content updates. These updates will be free to all players.

Ubisoft announced the year two plans as part of the game’s one year anniversary. Players will receive two free expansions in 2017. The first of the still unnamed expansion will be based on an event system according to Ubisoft. These events will feature “modifiers, leaderboards, and unique vanity items that will only be available through these activities.” The update will also enable players to set loadouts and swap quickly between different gear sets as well as a new in-game achievement system. [It] will reward players for different activities – long-term activities, short-term activities, and medium-term activities within the game,” said Julian Gerighty, Creative Director at Massive Entertainment in a statement.

Few details were given on the second expansion, but Gerighty said there will be a focus on new narrative content. However, this content will likely not take the form of traditional story missions. “We can’t really deliver story missions that will fit into the RPG aspects of the game in a simple way. So, we’re not going to be doing the classic main mission type of thing, but narrative content is something that we are definitely looking at,” said Gerighty.

The Division Anniversary Bonus

In addition to new expansions, players will receive bonus anniversary content starting today. Players who log in between March 9-16 will receive a new emote and 200 premium credits. During that same period, all field proficiency caches will have a double multiplier. Lastly, from March 9-11 all high-value target rewards will be doubled.

The Division is an open-world shooter/role-playing game hybrid set in New York City. Ubisoft Massive developed the game and it was a huge hit. It had the biggest first week sales of any new game franchise when it launched last year. Ubisoft recently announced that Ubisoft Massive is also working on an Avatar game. Gerighty assured fans of The Division that this won’t affect year-two plans. “it’s not just Massive behind The Division. This is an alliance of different studios – Massive in Sweden, Ubisoft Annecy in France, Reflections in Newcastle, and of course, Red Storm in North Carolina. There’s a huge amount – hundreds of dedicated developers – working on Year One and Year Two,” said Gerighty.
