Delay or Treat: Outlast 2 Postponed Until 2017

Outlast 2

Bad news for all horror lovers out there. Outlast 2 adds to the list of 2016’s delays and has been postponed to the first quarter of 2017.

Red Barrel’s followup to Outlast was supposed to arrive by the end of this year but it has been postponed. The developers confirmed the news today via their Facebook account with a rather short message. Everything points to the studio investing that extra buffer time in polishing and improving their game.

It has not been an easy decision, they claim. “Our mission as an indie studio is to deliver to you the best, most terrifying, most fulfilling experiences possible”, they wrote. “That’s why we’re taking just a little bit more time to make sure our vision for Outlast 2 is in no way compromised and is the experience you deserve.”

Outlast 2 Heads Into The Desert

Outlast 2 changes protagonists and settings from the original game’s haunted asylum. We’ll get into the shoes of Blake and Lynn Langermann, a pair of investigative journalists that go to extremes describe stories that others scarcely can believe Everything starts with the “seemingly impossible” murder of a pregnant woman at the edge of the Arizona desert,

Red Barrels is still channeling religious themes and all the spooky matter surrounding them in the sequel, however. This should be obvious by the upside-down burning cross and the preacher ravings that they used in their official trailer back in October. The first game did an amazing job in fostering the ambiance of an asylum and maintaining a sense of terror with its inmates. With Outlast 2 we can expect a fair share of superstition, corn fields, and the macabre nature of bigotry in the faith. Some people who played the PAX East 2016 demo already claim that Outlast 2 is a worthy successor.

Even with all the changes, the game is keeping some of the original game’s blood curling gameplay mechanics. The video camera and night vision lens – with their infamously short battery life – return. In their official announcement Red Barrels promises that Outlast 2 will scare the crap out of us. With everything we have seen so far, we are already completely sure of that.
