With nine hundred and fifteen games in its library, the Sega Genesis is my favorite retro video game system. Launching back in 1989, I remember getting this system because my original NES had given up on me. With a simple turn of events, I went from Nintendo to Sega.
Even though I have fond memories of my NES and the systems that followed after Genesis, I have more love and memories of that system, than all the other retro systems, even though Dreamcast and the PsX comes in very close.
The following games made the Genesis that much better for me:
Addams Family
After Burner II
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Animaniacs
Ariel the Little Mermaid
Back to the Future Part III
Battletoads & Double Dragon
Bonkers
Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind
Bubsy II
Bugs Bunny in Double Trouble
Burning Force
Chuck Rock
Columns
Contra: Hard Corps
Cool Spot
Decap Attack
Disney’s Aladdin
Double Dragon
Ecco the Dolphin
Fatal Fury
Flicky
Jewel Master
The Lion King
Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker
Mortal Kombat
Mutant League Football
Paperboy
Shadow of the Beast
The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball
Streets of Rage
ToeJam & Earl
Vectorman
Virtua Fighter 2
Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?
World Heroes
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Keep in mind; there are a lot of other games from the Genesis that I remember playing, however for me, those are the ones that stick out the most. Those that my parents rented for me was back when we had mom and pop rental stores and the one that I went to, had a mini arcade so it was always a win/win situation.
Games like the original Sonic and Vectorman had me pausing my system overnight or while I was in school, just so I wouldn’t lose my spot in a game. Thank goodness we now have the ability to save our games and even so, there are times when I will bust out my Genesis to play. Yes, I can get an emulator of the same game or play it on XBLA if available, but nothing beats the feeling of having a retro controller in your hand.
