The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2 Details Emerge

With E3 practically upon us, we’ve been waiting for some – any, really – news about the Nintendo 3DS-exclusive sequel to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Now we have some.

Speaking with Edge, Eiji Aonuma, the producer of The Legend of Zelda series, says A Link to the Past 2 will run silky-smooth in 3D mode, at 60 frames per second. He also confirms the game is a direct sequel to the Super NES classic, as it will bring back characters from the original game, as well as some new gameplay additions, such as the ability to have series hero Link become a 2D wall drawing to evade traps and solve puzzles.

What’s most exciting about the interview is what Aonuma doesn’t say, teasing something big:

“This new title will feature lots of things that are new to the series; right at the start of the game, there’s a big surprise that will shock players.”

Also making a return is the Dark World, an alternate dimension that was key to finishing the original game. It also let us know that Link‘s alternate form is that of a bunny. Putting that aside, we can only speculate over the surprise that Aonuma is hinting at, but we should definitely know more – including hopefully a release date – after Nintendo‘s E3 announcements, set for 10am ET on June 11th. Check back here for the latest coverage.
