The Ataribox Has Been Revealed

Ataribox

When Atari teased during E3 that they were coming up with their own console, a lot of gamers were wondering how this would play out. Apart from that cryptic video on their website, Atari decided to play it silent. No new details had emerged about the so called Ataribox after that announcement – until now.

In a press release, Atari has decided to showcase this piece of hardware. They have done so by sending out some extra images of the console, as well as delving into some of its internal specifics. Judging by its appearance, it’s clear we have some reminiscences from the Atari 2600 model coupled with an enhanced design. As the company reveals, their objective is “to create something new, that stays true to our heritage, while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari”.

The newsletter mentions that there will be two editions at launch: a black/red version and a wood version. They have also confirmed that the Ataribox is coming with HDMI output, an SD card slot and four USB ports.

Ataribox – The Future Role to Play

It’s still unclear the type of games the Ataribox will run. They have mentioned they are planning to bring back classic games as well as “current gaming content”. This is the part that throws us back and makes us long for more. Will the Ataribox be capable of running some current games? What seems more likely though is that Atari is following here the steps of Nintendo as in revamping old titles with a retro touch and enhanced graphics.

What’s clear is that we have just ventured into Waiting Land. “We know you are hungry for more details; on specs, games, pricing, timing,” Atari has stated. “We’re not teasing you intentionally. We want to get this right, so we’ve opted to share things step by step as we bring this to life, and to listen closely to the Atari community feedback as we do so.”

Are you interested in acquiring an Ataribox in the future, Fanatics? How many of you had Atari systems in their houses? Do you think Atari is ready to test their mettle in the console race? What do you expect from it? Let us know in the comment section down below!
