An interesting thing happened last night on MMO-Champion: they posted an interview snippet mentioning how the Star Wars: The Old Republic team is examining a free to play model.
In an interview with GamesTM, which is now unavailable, lead designer Emmanuel Lusinchi had the following to say:
The MMO market is very dynamic and we need to be dynamic as well. Unless people are happy with what they have, they are constantly demanding updates, new modes and situations. So we are looking at free-to-play but I can’t tell you in much detail. We have to be flexible and adapt to what is going on.
The game is already free to play until level 15 and offers free server transfers, yet still suffers from pretty low subscription rates. It may not be long before SWTOR suffers the same fate as Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons Online.
