Star Ocean 5 Trailers Unveil The Battle System

Earlier today, Square Enix brought forth two trailers for the highly anticipated JRPG known as Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness. The purpose of both trailers is to explore the title’s vast battle system and satisfy all of parties interested in the game.

Star Ocean 5 is the fifth main title game in the franchise set to appear after Star Ocean: The Last Hope, which came out for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles back in 2009. In total, this game marks the ninth released game pertaining to the Star Ocean franchise; a free-to-play card game called Star Ocean: Material Trader being the most recent. Veteran Star Ocean developer, tri-Ace, has been handling the development, which is sure to please long time fans.

As for a juicy bit of info, tri-Ace’s main focus for Star Ocean 5 is on the PS3 version, while PS4 version is considered to be a port.

Intense Battles Ahead

Excusing the Japanese dialogue, each trailer shows the gorgeous environments players are set to explore throughout the adventure. The combat system is deeply rooted in Action RPG elements, where players can chain together attacks and move around the battle arena freely. Including the main protagonist, up to seven allies can explore and engage in combat. Impressively, there are no load screens between the exploring stage and when battles are initiated.

Players will also have the ability to switch between characters mid-fight—allowing for potential strategy maneuvers and last second saves. While it’s hard for people who can’t speak or read Japanese, mechanics such as counterattacks and canceling combos into other combos makes an appearance in the trailers.

Honestly, Star Ocean 5 is looking to be quite the impressive title. With a combat system that seemingly has the depth to keep people interested, fans of Action RPG titles should get a real kick out of these trailers.

Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness is set to be released in Japan for the PS4 on March 31st and the PS3 on April 28th. As for the western launch, Star Ocean 5 shall arrive sometime this year—exclusively on PlayStation 4 consoles.
