A countdown timer on Square Enix‘s Japanese site is set to expire in four days. What happens after that is literally anyone’s guess. A quick examination of the website itself features the words “Star” and “Divide,” but not much else, except for a running twitter feed of everyone who shares the site’s link. The title of the page is “Secret Title,” with the date 12/12/2012 — the date the timer will hit zero.
Popular speculation is that it’s counting down to the reveal of a new Star Ocean game, possibly titled Star Ocean: Divide, if the site’s clues mean anything. The last Star Ocean game came in 2009 to Xbox 360 and 2010 to PlayStation 3; Star Ocean: The Last Hope was primarily well-received, with some calling it the best Japanese RPG you could buy at the time.
Then again, the countdown could literally mean anything. It’s not the first time Square Enix has used a countdown clock, and three of the most recent clocks have all led to something completely opposite of what many were expecting: a card-based arcade game, a browser-based strategy game, and what some assumed would be a sequel to The World Ends With You turned out to be a re-release for iOS.
Either way, we’ll know for sure next week.
