Sonic is back in an all new Nintendo exclusive title for both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Although the speedy blue hedgehog hasn’t always fared well in the single player department, it looks like SEGA is poised to capitalize on their recently announced partnership with Nintendo by taking a page out of Mario’s playbook. As noted on IGN, Sonic Lost World seems to be emulating a Super Mario Galaxy feel with its combination of 2D and 3D platforming across several varying worlds.

Story-wise, Lost World has Sonic teaming up with his nemesis Dr. Eggman to take down the “Deadly Six”, a group of menacing baddies that the doctor was going to use in some diabolic plot…until they turned on him. In addition to a new set of “color powers”, Sonic also has some “dynamic” new parkour skills at his disposal. Really, at this point, parkour is going to be standard in every title including zombie games, so why not give those mad skills to Sonic? Competitive multiplayer modes are also reportedly included in both the Wii U and 3DS versions of the game, with unique color powers for each platform. The full game can also be played on the Wii U Gamepad with a two-player option also available.
“We are proud of the strong relationship between Nintendo and SEGA and look forward to continuing success with Sonic Lost World on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS,” commented Hiroyuki Miyazaki, Chief Content Officer, SEGA of America. “The game marks an evolution of the Sonic series and fans –both old and new — will be excited by a story which sees two of video games biggest adversaries, Sonic and Dr. Eggman, joining forces for the first time to help defeat a new deadly threat.”
Does Sonic Team finally have a winning formula to break the stigma of its past missteps? Although that remains to be seen, with E3 right around the corner we’ll definitely be learning more about Sonic’s newest adventure very soon.
