As graphics in video games continue to reach new levels with increased textures, shadow quality, etc., the size of games continues to grow as well. There is an increasing need for storage when it comes to gaming and that is especially obvious on the console side. It was recently announced that the eagerly awaited Red Dead Redemption 2 will require 105 GB of storage space. The Xbox One X and PS4 Pro came with storage increases to a full Terabyte but with that may not be enough. This is where Seagate saves the day.
Seagate has been doing a lot of work on the gaming side of things. A few months back they announced that they would be releasing their new series of Xbox branded SSDs for the Xbox One family of consoles. They worked closely with Microsoft to provide a product that fulfilled the gamers’ needs and looked good at the same time.
The Game Drive for Xbox comes in 3 storage sizes: 500 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB. There is a lot of storage space crammed into a sleek small package. The drive was designed to look great next to the Xbox family of consoles. It sports a simple yet beautiful matte finish with the Xbox logo across the front. It is smaller than a deck of playing cards and also has a small led light on the front that lets you know that it is connected properly.
Like many external drives these days, it is powered via USB which helps keep the design sleek and the device portable. The difference here is that we have a USB-C to USB 3.0 cable as your connector. In some cases, the combination of installing some games on the external hard drive and the faster transfer rates of USB-C/3.0 can lead to some increased loading times and transfer speeds when moving games. Also, something that most people won’t know or can’t see is that the firmware on the drive has been made to work better with the Xbox One console. As an external drive, it can be used on pcs and other devices but it was designed for the console.
I really believe that Seagate has delivered a premium device here. It’s definitely a straightforward product. If you need storage, Seagate has been making hard drives for the consoles for a while now. After a couple weeks with this specific drive, I have no issues recommending this. It may be a little bit more expensive at $150 for the 500 GB model but it is a solid device.
