Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the upcoming Star Wars Anthology film that is scheduled for release on December 16th, 2016.
These anthology films are planned for release on the years that main episode films do not come out (such as The Force Awakens or the upcoming Episode VIII, which is scheduled for release in 2017).
Today, we finally got our first real look at Rogue One and it looks absolutely fantastic. A trailer premiered on Good Morning America and just slightly teases everything we should expect to see in this new film.
We have a new female protagonist named Jyn Erso played by Felicity Jones. She seems as though she is similar to Rey in Force Awakens. She is somebody who has been on her own for a while but she is eventually recruited to the Rebel Alliance to help steal plans for the Death Star. Rogue One takes place in between Episodes III and IV, which has always been an interesting time period in the Star Wars universe because the gap is quite large and the blanks haven’t been filled in. (At least, not anything that is considered canon anymore.)
We also have confirmation that at least two previous characters from the Star Wars Universe will be in this movie. Mon Mothma appears in the trailer, who is one of the leaders of the Rebel Alliance in the Original Trilogy, and Darth Vader is supposed to appear in the movie. Although, the Sith failed to make an appearance in this new trailer, which is a slight disappointment, but the Imperial March Theme makes an appearance at the end.
The movie seems to have kept the look of Star Wars in the best ways possible. It has the same refreshing visual look that the Force Awakens had, but also still feels like the original trilogy. We have the appearance of AT-AT Walkers and Stormtroopers and different looking Stormtroopers. It looks like a Star Wars film and feels like a Star Wars film, albeit a darker one.
Before this trailer came out, the actor, Riz Ahmed who makes an appearance in the film, was calling the movie a “war movie”. He even went to the lengths of comparing it to the sci-fi version of Saving Private Ryan. Based on this trailer, one can see some of the validity in that statement. The movie looks dark and gritty, and for good reason. It is a movie about a bunch of rebels trying to steal plans for the most powerful weapon in the galaxy, that isn’t exactly light material to watch on screen.
