Rift, Trion‘s MMORPG, is going free to play.
This is good news.
MMORPGs have been making the transition from a subscription model, to a free to play model, for years now, and one of the bigger names in modern MMOs is finally making the switch. There is a lot of reasons why this is good for all parties involved. Developers actually make more money this way, and it removes any barrier to entry that players might have had. If you’re interested, you now have no reason not to hop in and give it a shot.
That’s not to say the free to play model doesn’t come with some risks. If executed poorly (ahem, Runes of Magic) it can ruin any chance the title has of being a quality game. Rift however, seems to be conscious of these risks, and is making the right choices to avoid any negative repercussions. Namely, all players will be able to access the game’s content, and player power will be earned in game, rather than bought through the store. Those are the two primary concerns with shifts in payment model such as this, and it looks like Trion is on the right track.
So what’s to lose, guys? Why not give the game a shot.
