Report: Grand Theft Auto V Will Take Place In LA

After reporting earlier today on the upcoming release of the first official Grand Theft Auto V trailer due out next week, Kotaku is now reporting that Rockstar‘s latest entry in their award winning series is due to return to the fictional San Andreas, Rockstar‘s version of California. Specifically, the article mentions that the game will take place in Los Angeles, or if you want to call it by its name in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Los Santos. But honestly, it’s hard to imagine the entire game taking place in only Los Santos. Sure, Grand Theft Auto IV took place entirely in Liberty City, which is based off of New York City, and is, believe it or not, a smaller sized city than Los Angeles in terms of square miles. But New York City has double the population of Los Angeles and when we visited Los Santos in-game it was joined by two other cities. It would also be an awful tease for San Andreas not to make a full return.

It’s been widely speculated that GTAV has been in development under the codename “RUSH” and deals with various FBI involvements, lots of weed, and even a couple of hippies. The logo suggests it will dive into the economic crisis as well. These theories are backed up by the casting call, as well as domain name registrations, as well as suggest the game will take place in the modern day. Personally, when I think hippies in California, I think of San Francisco, not Los Angeles. Or to be more specific to the San Andreas region, I think of San Fierro.

For what its worth, Rockstar North has been developing a PS3 exclusive game called Agent, which was announced at E3 2009…and then completely forgotten seemingly. It still exists and deals with paranoia, counter-intelligence, and espionage during the height of the Cold War, which would go in hand with some of the characters listed on the casting call.

Except for the fact that one of the characters loves to play FPS online; there weren’t any FPS games during the Cold War. None that I know of anyway. This leads to the belief that the casting call is indeed for GTAV.

Maybe.

Oh well. We’ll know for sure come November 2nd.
