Two months after the re-release of Final Fantasy 14, now rechristened “A Realm Reborn“, the title seems to be enjoying a much warmer reception than it did in its first iteration. A botched 1.0 version of Square Enix‘s second MMO saw the studio back peddle and implement drastic design changes in order to appease a disgruntled fan base. The result? Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn is now looking at 1.5 million registered users. Putting that into some perspective, big time MMOs (such as EverQuest) used to pull numbers like 200,000 users and call that a booming success. The bar has been raised, however, in the post-World of Warcraft era, which boasted 14 million users at its peak. We should mention though that WoW is in the decline recently, down to a paltry 7.7 million users, maintaining its status as a titan of the genre. So whether MMO’s are in decline in general, or maybe it’s just time for a new generation, A Realm Reborn seems to be doing just fine. 1.5 million and rising, 2 months after release, is nothing to sneeze at. We’ll have to keep an eye on it and see where that plateaus, but at the moment it’s looking like Final Fantasy 14 may become a staple of the genre for this next generation.
