When it comes to the recent Battlefield 3 Vs. Modern Warfare 3 debate there’s been very little in the way of assessing a winner. Sure you can go by sheer sales , where Modern Warfare 3 was the clear winner despite a valiant effort by DICE. In order to properly get an insight into the frenzied battle you’d need to do some hardcore stat work on how much the games are being played, right? Well rather than do that yourself the kind folks at Raptr have done the hard work for you.
First off let’s look at some of the base playtime stats:
. Xbox 360 players logged 40% more launch-day playtime in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, averaging 6.19 hours compared to 4.45 hours ofBattlefield 3
. During each game’s first week of launch, Xbox 360 players logged 17% more per-user playtime in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, averaging 20.45 hours compared to 17.37 hours of Battlefield 3
. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 accumulated more total hours played
in one week post-launch than Battlefield 3 has in three weeks post-launch
. 53% of Battlefield 3 players on Xbox 360 are also playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, compared to just 31% of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 players who also played Battlefield 3
. During the first week of launch, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 stole more playtime from Battlefield 3 than any other game
. For the first time ever for any franchise, three Call of Duty games were in the top 10 playtime charts on Raptr
These numbers give a rather grim look at the ongoing conflict, honestly, Modern Warfare 3 has a crushing dominance. The most stark finding is that in one week, one week, MW3 had more than 3 times the playtime that BF3 generated in 3 weeks. You could argue that this is down to the increased sales, but MW3 didn’t sell that many more copies. The answer seems to lye in the crossover, with 51% of BF3 users also playing MW3.
Okay, with the hardcore playtime stats down let’s look at some more opinionated stats. With any luck Battlefield can take regain some pride here:
. 81% of respondents were more excited for the launch of Battlefield 3
. 92% of respondents consider DICE a more innovative developer than Infinity Ward
. 58% of respondents said the Battlefield franchise has had a bigger impact on the FPS genre
. 80% of respondents feel the Call of Duty franchise generates more hype through its marketing
Well, that certainly is interesting. Despite it’s sheer dominance of user’s playime it seems that Battlefield 3 has the edge when it comes to the users actual opinions. No only do gamers feel that DICE have a made a bigger impact and are more innovative, but more people where excited for BF3’s launch than for MW3’s.
So why the disparity? Well that’s something that’s wide open to speculation, and not something i’ll go into right now. In the long and heated battle for supremacy it seems Modern Warfare 3 has taken gamers minds but Battlefield 3 has their hearts.
