So everyone and their mother have heard of the “lag” issue that was reported using a stop watch. I was reading an article on a Natal fan site and it came to my attention that someone actually did a little article a ways back about lag in games and if you want (I highly recommend the read) you can catch the link at the end.
So the Fan site was talking about the extremes that ran from .08 seconds up to .12 seconds. To put this in something less likely to cause issue with the readers (even though it seems many of you lack or just don’t care about conversions) this is actually 80ms and 120ms respectively. Both of these numbers are well under the lag of most 30fps games.
Let’s put this in perspective with additional information gathered from Eurogamer’s hard work. Let’s go ahead and take a look:
• Most 60FPS games have a 66.67ms latency – Ridge Racer 7, for example.
• 30FPS games have a minimum potential lag of 100ms, but many exceed this.
• Citing GTAIV as an example, West suggests that a 166ms response is where gamers notice controller lag, which could also explain the Killzone 2 furore too.
• Based on his video his very unscientific findings are 150ms for Killzone 2.
Now I don’t have too much to add to this, but I just wanted to put the whole “Lag” issue into perspective. I highly recommend the read and hopefully they’ll do a PS3 version as they just got the hardware in to do more mathematically correct measurements.
