Atari’s Cancelled Primal Rage 2 Now Playable Via MAME

Primal Rage 2 rises from the dead.

When talking about vaporware, it’s hard not to think of Atari’s follow-up to the 1994 runaway arcade fighting game hit. The original game featured extremely detailed and unique character design. It offered an array of special moves, techniques, and finishing moves any fighting-game fan would appeal to. So when the sequel was announced and then abruptly canceled before it’s intended release, fans were beyond disappointed.

Over the years, rumored screenshots and game play video have leaked online and even word of a playable cabinet containing an alpha board of Primal Rage 2 began to spread. Now, some crafty programmers have figured out how to emulate a leaked early build of the canned fighter, now finally running on MAME, giving fans a chance to play what could have been.

Cracked by YouTube user Gruntzilla94, the leaked Primal Rage 2 build, Version 0.36A, features eight playable characters with a mostly full set of special ability moves and finishing moves much like the original. Primal Rage 2 differs, however, in that players now select human avatars for their “dino-gods” and can momentarily morph into their prehistoric creatures for a few moments to unleash health-crippling combos and moves. It’s reminiscent the morphing in Bloody Roar on PSX, but 2D and with Dinosaurs.

Primal Rage 2 Gameplay

Using a custom-created version of the MAME arcade emulator known as “MAME4RAGE2”, the game now boots offering a now fully playable build of the game. What a sight to behold! Seeing the likes of Sauron, Talon and Vertigo go toe-to toe in combat with newcomers Slashfang and Necrosan in stunning new detail (when compared to the original game) is awesome, if somewhat heartbreaking considering we could have had this game 20 years ago. Hell, maybe we would have a Primal rage 3, 4 or even 5 by now.

Bootlegging and pirating is, you know, illegal and not condoned here. However, if you feel compelled to at least research, check out, and perhaps even play one of the most infamous vaporware titles in the video game industry ever in Primal Rage 2, you can do so by heading to Gruntzilla94’s dedicated Primal Rage page at http://urthrage.weebly.com/. Then hop on social media and let us know what you think of Primal rage 2 on MAME over @TheGameFanatics on Facebook, Instagram and twitter!
